The police department roles and functions are basically split up into two categories. They are to maintain the law and maintain the order of the people. Society today has a hard time accepting that the police are here to help and not just out to get them. It can take years for a community to trust the police and one bad incident to destroy that trust in an instance. If the people really understood what the roles and functions of the police are, they would have a better understanding and trust them a little better. There are a lot of principal roles and functions that the police must abide by the law. The first two are very important; to uphold and enforce the law impartially, and to protect life, liberty, property, human rights, and dignity of the members of the public and to promote and preserve public order. Without these two major roles, there would be chaos all over the world. Police officials shall fulfill the duty imposed on them by law, by serving the community and by protecting all persons against illegal acts. They shall respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons and must not commit any act of corruption. The roles and functions are similar in a lot of ways. They both help and protect the people of the communities. Here are the roles of the police departments in general: • To prevent and control conduct widely recognized as threatening to life and property • To aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm, such as the victims of violent attack • To facilitate the movement of people and vehicles • To assist those who cannot care for themselves, the intoxicated, the addicted, the mentally ill, the physically disables, the old, and the young • To resolve conflict, whether it be between individuals, groups or individuals, or individuals and their government • To identify problems that have
