Police Brutality: The Use of Excessive Force Angelice Dollson CRJ–422 Criminal Justice Capstone Robert Jackson March 7, 2011 The police officers are to protect and serve the public and communities’ with their best interest at heart. Members of law enforcement are government officials that impose the laws and preserve order. There are occasions, when the police officers are engaged in a dangerous and stressful call of duty that can involve violent situations that must be controlled. We as citizens value law and order, we do not want to see our streets run by criminals who terrorize people who abide the law and we as citizens created police departments to prevent law and order not to join in with the criminals. We all decide d that police officers should have the ability to use force, but not in all situations.
At the same time, many departments observe a "code of silence" in which officers protect corrupt co-workers even if they do not indulge in misconduct themselves. And an officer will encounter incidents in which witnesses or offenders accuse him or her of not following proper law enforcement protocol. In all of these situations, only integrity will allow an officer to do the job. No amount of supervision can substitute for honor and honesty. Courage the job of the police officer can involve matters of life and death.

Police brutality has been a problem within our society for some time now. Due to the many amount of cases, police brutality has shaped a view amongst the lower class that enforcers of the law tend to take advantage of their given power. In most cases of police brutality there is excessive force being used and unnecessary physical force and sometimes even deadly force. Police brutality has impacted our society because it changed the view of local authority; they went from being heroes of our communities to the vigilantes that we watch over our shoulders.
Sixth principles “Police use Physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion advice and warning is found to be insufficient”. A lot of police agencies get in a lot of trouble because of wrongful death or injury. You can only use deadly force when the public put the officer in danger life or harming the public. There should not be a different recruiting or supervision of a unit like this because working a dangerous job like this calls for people that have been involved with crime in their past and already have an understanding of what it is like. These certain people also call for a great amount of street smarts to go along with their professionalism.

Police brutality remains a major concern for those of the community. The intent of this paper is to show examples of police brutality and how the criminal justice system and law enforcement administrators handled these cases. Gang violence is seen where unprivileged people live, and it has become one of the most important things that society has to face. The community I grew up in was filled with gang violence which caused a lot of problems because shootings would be heard; sometimes, it is unsafe to go outside because gang members would be shooting each other. This inspired me not only change the way I live, but society in general. When I become a successful adult, I would like to draw attention to gang violence so that I can help move towards potential solutions that will make the community a better place. By developing strong communication bonds with teens, we can help prevent teems from joining gangs which will result in fewer gang violence crime rates.
