Community Agency Assessment: Planned Parenthood Planned Parenthood and Teen Pregnancy Teen pregnancy continues to be a major concern in the United States (Sieving et al., 2011). The rate of pregnancy among teens aged 15 to 17 in Ohio is 19.7% while Montgomery County’s teen pregnancy rate is 25.5% (Community Health, 2010). With many agencies and organizations available nationally and locally I have chosen to write about the local agency Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest sexual education provider (Planned Parenthood, 2012). With the continued rise of teen pregnancy, education and proper health care is a necessity. This agency provides both and has already prevented almost half a million unintended pregnancies. The role of the public health nurse within this agency fulfills a variety of tasks. The nurse would conduct the initial evaluation and assessment. Assisting the physician with physical exams is another task in which the nurse is responsible. As the public health nurse knowing the proper resources in which to refer patients to is essential. Education is also a big part of the public health nurse. Providing resources on how to obtain contraceptives is also good. Another role of the public health nurse is to provide interventions that would benefit adolescents. Such interventions could be to offer programs on problem-solving skills, character development skills, and support groups. These types of programs and groups would allow the disadvantaged youth a place to seek support in times of need or crisis instead of turning to the streets and unprotected sex. In conclusion, with teen pregnancy a continued issue in the United States, we as healthcare providers must continue to educate our youth on the risks of risky sexual behaviors. With the help of our communities and agencies such as Planned Parenthood, we can continue to strive towards a decrease in teen pregnancy
