Yaphet Geadion Arts Awareness Liberatore 04/08/14 Assignment 5 – Pictures at an Exhibition: Limoges Throughout the entire piece, the movement that just so happened to really catch my eye (or ear) was Movement XI: Limoges which, on the provided youtube link, ran from about 18:17-19:46. It takes a keen listener to understand and interpret the different aspects of each movement and how they all differ yet correlate to the work as whole, so when I say that Limoges stood out to me it’s because of the obvious reason that compared to the rest of the work, it is the most up-beat and colorful section. According to the description, this movement takes place in the wildly chaotic market within Limoge, which is a central town located in Haute Vienne. The segment depicts women bickering and gossiping at this market, and is well represented by the different orchestra instruments, with each almost perfectly portraying different women: from the clarinets and oboes responding to the squabbling from the violins and other string instruments, with the percussion intertwining subtly, almost as though they were spectators of the pandemonium taking place. From the provided link in Courseweb, I found that the Limoges movement didn’t necessarily have one individual painting to accompany the work, as it had around 14 different sketches with notes written by Moussorgsky, one of which in particular said: "Women were quarreling as hard as they would start to seize hold of each other at any moment." However, from my perspective, it seems as though only one of the several images corresponds to this quote, which is an actual picture of women on the ground fighting and pulling hair. There’s not necessarily a specific focus image presented here, which kind of attributes to the idea of disarray Moussorgsky was trying to convey through the piece.
