It made it easier to figure out exactly what she was looking for in my paper. It clarified some questions I had and made me realize that I can actually write a good paper when I put my mind to it and take the same time and effort as she does to correct our papers and apply to writing my own
Ricky choses the hardest books imaginable. He believes in reading up on what others have to say about a difficult book, and then making up his own mind about it. He says that part of the reason he feels this way is because of his teacher, Mr. Buxton, who taught him Shakespeare in 10th grade. Ricky shares how Mr. Buxton met him one night to go over the text line by line, but he didn’t share the conclusion with Moody, he left that for him to figure out on his own. Reading Umberto Eco’s “Role of the Reader” in college, Ricky states that, “The reader completes the text, that the text is never finished until it meets this voracious and engaged reader.” Although there are critics who believe there is a right and a wrong way to ready books, Moody says, “I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of literary meaning in all cases.” Part 2.
I knew the story had to be told. Not to transmit an experience is to betray it”(1) People would read what he wrote down and think about it. It usually comes the illusion after civilization but after reading it people might rethink about it. The impact on literacy is to let people consider what had happened with more points of view. Even though it is just Wiesel’s duty to write it down, the literacy may change people’s mind.
In this particular case, Murray does a great job sharing personal experiences upon his argument of whether there should be more vocational schools and stop using a college degree as a requirement for jobs, but stands defenseless due to the omission of statistics where only one statistic stands to defend his position. In Anglesey’s article “How Can I Incorporate Evidence into My Paper” she states that “[one needs] the author’s expertise to solidify [their] claim” which Murray does not do successfully in his paper, which ultimately weakens the evidence Murray can provide to specify his opposition and argument. Moreover, the type of evidence Murray could have recognized to portray a logical standpoint would have been to include facts of pursing high educational degrees and comparing them to those individuals searching for jobs without an efficient education. Also, including data of how past and present years have on individuals with the qualifications of education end of pursing high paying jobs. Murray could have went in so many directions rather than just providing one fact and relying on the rest of his essay on personal
Unit one also taught me to reevaluate how important certain priorities when it came to writing. I learned from the other unit one authors, Joseph M. Williams and James E. Porter, that when an essay is read by someone who is looking for grammatical error or plagiarism instead of content, they will often find the error and ignore the content. Although I do still know the importance of grammar and originality, this class and the grading style has let me put those constructs in the back seat until the editing process, instead of making them something I had to constantly worry about. I don’t believe that good writing revolves around grammar, but rather how well your words can convey a message to the intended audiences.
I had to disregard a lot of information that was not entirely relevant to my research question. Also at times the content was vague, and the ideas did not always follow logically. I used Study Support to develop my writing skills, but wished I had approached them for help at an earlier stage, as this would have saved me a considerable amount of stress. To conclude, the dissertation assignment has improved my confidence in my ability, through producing a lengthy piece of work. I feel it has effectively concluded the academic phase, and I am excited and motivated by the prospect of getting a job in the fashion
My writing has improved this semester tremendously. I feel I have improved on, writing a strong clear thesis statement, organizing my thoughts, and not using run-on sentences. The first useful technique in writing an essay is a strong thesis statement. Before I started ENC91, my introductions where not clear therefore my thesis statements weren’t strong. Without a strong thesis you cannot have
This preparation did not prepare me for the previous two days. People I barely knew were asking me about my letter. I tried to pacify the meaning and not give a straightforward answer, however, I remembered Hester’s strength and courage within the novel, the Scarlet letter. In comparison, I began telling those who asked with a new sense of confidence. With every, “What does ‘J’ stand for?” I would reply assertively, “’J’ is for jealously.” However, being asked what the letter indicated was not the worst part.
The audience –subject relationship will probably be broad due to age differences in our class and different opinions. I expect for some people to disagree with my view of this interpretation. They might simply look at this article as a story about helping the less fortunate people become equal and how the more fortunate are being hindered in the process, but not how it effect’s humanity as a whole. They might also argue the references about the Vonnegut’s war experiences influencing this story. Audience-writer relationship would have to be that we are all classmates.
If students understand this they will be able to understand the history and the value of autobiographies and memoirs. Memoirs are pieces of writing that can be fairly new to college students, but most of the time students do not realize that some pieces are labeled memoirs. Memoirs are more thought about as autobiographies to students. “Instead of telling about the entire life of a person, the memoir tells only about a certain period of time or about a certain story arc of the author's life.” This can help by just focusing on a certain period of history and offer more insight, it would focus more on the period and not just fully someone’s life. This helps us to really look at history and what it is and can see how it shapes our lives and our surroundings.
