Specifically Stereotypical Marcia Scott PHI103: Informal Logic (AFK1212A) Instructor: Doug Stave April 9, 2012 Specifically Stereotypical The majority of people experience stereotyping in one form or another. At some point, almost every person has made generalizations of others. Conversely, almost every person has been the subject of generalizations at some point in his/her life as well. My life is not different. I have been a victim of stereotyping and have been guilty of stereotyping as well. Three different stereotypes that I have experienced in my own life are related to ethnicity, spirituality and health. Each of these stereotypes, and the assumptions made because of them, has impacted my life and changed my perspective of other people as well as changing the way that others perceive me. One might ask, “What are stereotypes?” Stereotypes can be defined as predispositions and/or opinions regarding another person based on characteristics of that person. I, like many others, assumed that someone that is thin, has healthy eating habits and that people who are overweight are lazy. Those presumptions changed when within my own life, I saw them to be untrue. I have a daughter that is 20 years old; 5’11” inches and eats nothing but fast food and junk food. She is very little (if any) fruits and vegetables, doesn’t exercise at all, and still weighs only 135 pounds. My other daughter, on the other hand, is 16 years old, 5’5”, eats primarily fruits, vegetables and protein, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. She weighs 155 pounds. My third daughter is 17 years old, eats primarily junk food; however does also eat vegetables almost daily, does not exercise much, is 5’7” and weighs 140 pounds.
