With nations becoming increasingly connected through mediums like the internet, the world has changed substantially within the last decade. It’s a time where Spanish songs such as Luis Fonsi’s Despacito can top the American music charts, where traveling to the other side of the world takes a few hours instead of weeks, and more importantly, where states like California and Utah are continuing to promote and provide for a growing demand for bilingual education through dual-immersion programs. Although the states have made great strides in the right direction, bilingual education should not only be encouraged but rather be required for K-12 students. In the past, the programs failed to provide English-language learners (ELL) the knowledge to overcome the language barrier impeding equal participation in classrooms, prompting the establishment of Proposition 227 of 1998 (later repealed in 2016), which required all public schools to be instructed in English. Although there are statistics that show the academic gap within first graders, the assumption that students can become as fluent as native speakers in English after just one year of English-only Immersion classes in the first place is far-reaching. Any parent would love to see their child grow up with the most opportunity to succeed in a growing linguistically diverse world. An increased knowledge of languages fosters the advancement of cognitive ability and the social and communication skills that often translate into a child’s ability to successfully navigate his or her everyday lives in creating long-lasting relationships with others.
