As a teacher, one of the main roles is to motivate your learners to develop their ability and aspiration to learn. Some may read about delivering training and facilitating learning , but in reality a teacher does much more than that. A teaching role is not just about teaching your subject or preparing learners for assessment. The focus of a teaching role relates very much to inspiring learners to change and develop their personal, social and professional skills to the best of their ability. In this respect, the ultimate aim is to enable learners to understand how to take responsibility for their own development.
One of the key responsibilities I feel for a teacher is to provide information, wisdom. In order to share their knowledge and understanding of a subject or topic a teacher needs to have a deep understanding of the topic that they are teaching. However alongside this a teacher should not claim to know it all, and be willing to learn from their students. ‘Knowledge may be seen as a level of awareness, consciousness or familiarity gained by experience, learning or thinking.’ (Jarvis 1987). It is important that the teacher appreciate any input from their students, whether the answer is correct or not.
I believe that teaching reading and writing begins with helping children want the life of a reader and writer. In order to accomplish this goal of developing lifelong readers and writers, I believe it is my responsibility to keep learning about proven research-based literacy programs. I believe that even in Tier I literacy instruction the teacher has the responsibility to differentiate instruction so that the vast array of learning styles and abilities present in the classroom will be nurtured. I believe that the most important part of literacy instruction, whether it be reading or writing, is communication. In reading, the communication is accomplished with strong comprehension skills that involve active participation of the reader as he interacts with the author to create meaning for himself.
An educator should constantly be revising lesson plans and expanding their own knowledge in order to deliver an optimal learning experience for the students. Incorporating guidelines to educate students without bias into a code of ethics ensures that students receive equal treatment in the classroom. An educator’s primary concern should be the physical and mental well being of the student. This being said, it is the responsibility of the educator to be vigilant of a student’s physical and emotional behavior while in the classroom. Child abuse is a dilemma that may be encountered when working as a professional educator in the school system.
Promoting Literacy and Comprehension The ways of traditional teaching are a thing of the past. In today’s classrooms teachers are working hard to find new and exciting ways to engage the students, promote learning, comprehension and writing. However, even with the stimulating activities and lessons students will continue to ask the same question, “Why do I have to learn this? When will this ever be a part of real life?” Teachers must be prepared to explain to their students exactly how math, reading, science, and history will all be a used outside of a classroom setting and in the real world. For example, teachers should shine light on how studying algebra actually develops stronger problem solving skills and leads students into a deeper level of thinking.
Current Issues Summary and Response Matt 12/12/2010 Intro As a future special education teacher one of my jobs will be to keep up-to-date on current issues in the education field and let my parents know about any helpful development on these current issues. It is important for teachers to keep tabs on new developments that could be useful to better their understanding of education as a whole. There are a plethora of current issues involving special education. These issues range from more controversial to less controversial. Some of the more controversial issues are the use of tests to place students into special education, how should we grade students with special needs and how to discipline a student who is in special education.
To address a behavior issue I believe that first you must understand the behavior and more importantly understand what its causes are. Jacob Kounin talks about in preventing discipline problems, which have to do with the subject matter of the classroom. Kounin emphasizes that teachers should make instructional activities enjoyable and challenging for the students. I believe if the students are
Knoblauch admits that literacy is a necessary aspect to modern society, but warns the reader how educators and other citizens must be aware of the power literacy holds and not to be “blinded by the the light of their own benevolence”, (Knoblauch 452). Tannen also believes that power lies in the educational system itself, but focuses on the style of learning being taught to the students. Tannen discusses the style of education that teaches students that power lies in debate and arguments. For example, “”students are taught that they must disprove others’ arguments in order to be original, make a contribution, and demonstrate their intellectual ability”, (Tannen 546). Unlike Knoblauch and Tannen, Barber believes that the power of education does not lie inside the educational system itself, but by the society
Nowadays teachers should be conscious of how students learn so as to create and develop their teaching strategy and learning actions. Because the way which teachers use has a straight effect on individual's learning and understanding. Those data's objectives is to motivate students to begin thinking about learning and find out the way they prefer and they can understand. We can classify the approaches to learning in to two types: surface learning and deep learning. Each person's thinking effect on which way they choose.
Kohn (1997) changed my opinion on how to teach character education. I realized I have been following many of the strategies to teach character education in my class. I realized I was not helping my students to understand and internalize moral values. Character education curriculum requires exposure to moral values, teachers serve as the moral model, and they need to provide an environment where children feel, respected and safe. The curriculum should provide opportunities for students to discuss morals.
