A person/event that changed my life I came across Dr. Daisaku Ikeda’s teachings when I was going through a rather rough patch in life. At that point of time, I felt that my life had hit rock bottom. I used to be overly depressed and hated everyone and everything around me. There were several questions plaguing me, but I couldn’t voice them to anyone. I felt lost, confused, angry and anything but confident. Things were a lot different in school though. I was a competitive and ambitious girl. I was the President of the Quiz and Debating committee, Captain of the Equestrian team and the School Prefect. I held a one of a kind record in academics in school. For six years in a row, I got the top rank in every exam. Needless to say, the pressure to perform in each event put immense pressure on me. I used to naturally enjoy each of these activities. However, as I began participating in inter-school competitions, the pressure to win started dominating everything else. Even though my passion to win had started with the pure intention of exceeding my own expectations, it had soon turned into a fixation. I became neurotic about it. I loved the adrenaline rush that I got from competing. It became an addiction for me. A couple of years after high school, I reached a point in life where I could no longer handle the pressure of competitions. More so, I couldn’t find any purpose to my life. I felt like the proverbial rat that wins many a rat race, but can’t escape being a rat. I could no longer identify my true passions in life or find genuine happiness in anything. Gradually, I began losing interest in everything- whether it be debating, quizzing, horse riding or academics. It was at this point in life that I happened to come across the teachings of Dr.Daisaku Ikeda - a poet, philosopher and peace activist.
