In today’s society many will argue whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. In today’s world athletes are being paid very large amounts of money for their work. Some of them are getting paid over $25 million a year just to play a game. The importance of an occupation in sports is microscopic compared to those in the world of medicine or education. “Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of ones work” (123helpme). All athletes are overpaid because they do not offer society an important role that improves our world in comparison to other professionals such as medical doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Financial rewards should come depending on how hard you have worked to achieve it. Many look at professional athletes as lucky people who happen to be talented at shooting, throwing, or hitting a ball. On the other hand, less talented individuals have to labor themselves through college, work for their tuition, and have a career as a doctor, engineer, or a banker if they want to earn a fraction of what these overpaid professional athletes get. “Americans do not value education” (Anderson). When you look at the value of entertainment, it is obvious that we as a society value entertainment highly. But there is no reason that these athletes, who are here to just entertain us, get paid higher wages than those that save our lives and teach us such as medical doctors and teachers do. It is ridiculous that athletes make millions of dollars a year, and yet demand more. The entertainment that these athletes provide is only entertainment; it is not necessary to the function of society.
