Watson’s theory of caring is probably one of the better known nursing theories. Watson’s theory had three parts to it and all are important in regards to the aspect of caring. The first was the transpersonal caring relationship that takes place between the nurse and the patient. This is also the key to her overall theory of caring. In the relationship the nurse needs to have the ability to connect with another human being, ability to assess the patient’s current status and address the needs they have, and being sensitive to the patient’s needs. The next part of her theory is the carative factors. These factors were to be like a map to guide you in your nursing practice rather than a checklist that needs to be complete in order to fully practice Watson’s theory. 1. Forming a system of values in which you will show through kindness and caring to the patient. 2. Enabling and sustaining faith-hope. Providing reassurance to the patient about what is going on and encouraging them in the faith and hope they have about their situation. 3. Being sensitive to self and others. First have to know how important things are to you so you will take that same consideration when dealing with others. 4. Developing a relationship. Putting time and effort into a relationship with your patient in which the patient can trust you as their nurse. 5. Promoting and accepting the expression of feelings and emotions. Making sure you do not put them down but allow them to express how they are feeling at the time. This allows for a deeper connection with the patient because they feel someone cares enough to listen to them. 6. Engaging in a problem-solving process. Using one ’s self in caring for the patient by applying knowledge from experiences in order for a good result. 7. Promoting teaching-learning.
