Application of Theory Paper Nursing theory is the framework that defines nursing practice, establishes standards of care and provides the information essential for functioning patient care. Theory presents logical and educated reasons for nursing actions, based on structured, written depictions of what nursing is and what nurses do (Rousell, 2010). When problems arise within the educational, research, administration and direct patient care settings; theory supplies a foundation for dialog. When using theory to facilitate resolution of a nursing issue it guides leaders in the direction of the common goal of affording superior patient care (Rousell, 2010). In this paper I will apply the Ida Jean Orlando’s Nursing Deliberate Nursing Process Theory to patient boarding in the Emergency Department (ED), a current issue at the facility I am employed.
The contribution of the whole team will improve the quality and continuity of the care and provide the best outcomes for the patient. Delegation and Teamwork It is obvious that Ms. W is concerned about Ms. R so the nursing supervisor should approach her with that in mind. She should speak to her privately and find out the reasons why she is not delegating some of the tasks to the team. There are many barriers to delegation such as thee person feels they can do the task themselves, inadequate training in delegation, and reluctance to depend on others. The nursing supervisor should explain the importance of delegation in improving workflow and influencing positive patient outcomes.
This theory would allow service users and health care professionals to communicate more easily and effectively. For example, a nurse would be unable to give effective advice and comfort to a patient until she was able to know what the service user was feeling. From what the service user originally said, by analyzing her behaviour and words the nurse is able to choose the most appropriate way to respond which would benefit the service user the most. This would be done by following the stages of the communication cycle. the service user will ‘think of an idea’ or something they would like to say, code the message and send it by a means of communication to the receiving individual, the nurse, who will then decode the message think about what was said and from that respond in a way in which to answer or help the service user, i.e.
Caring for patients needs is the most important quality that any practical nurse should have. When a patient sees and feels that the nurse cares about him/her immediately the patient starts building a trust relationship with that nurse. By building this trust the patient most likely will discuss its health problems with the nurse. Since the objective part of treatment is held by patient telling its nurse about the symptoms he or she faces, the trust is a must for patient to be able to discuss it with its nurse. In addition a good practical nurse should also be a good listener.
It is non-judgemental and has an appreciating view. Holistic nurses focus on healing the whole person through body, emotion, mind, spirit and environment. They are more than medical assistants and believe in mental attitudes and help lift the patients’ wellness through this connection (Anne Mueller, 2011) The Oxford Dictionary (2012) defines a barrier to communication as anything that interferes with the transfer of the intended information from sender to receiver. These barriers could, for example, be nerves, anxiety, confusion or different cultures/languages. As direct providers of care to patients, nurses are held accountable for defining standards of care and keep within the guidelines set by
Patients deserve a well educated nurse. It is very important for a nurse to educate their patients upon discharge, treatment options, diet, hospital stay and medications. If a patient is well educated and informed by a nurse with a BSN degree, they will make a better health choice and prevent them from being readmitted into
Components of good documentation are the same as Watson’s theory and nursing process; assessment, plan of action, intervention, and evaluation. A caring nurse will want to be able to improve and become more efficient with documentation so that they are able to provide more direct nursing care to their patients. Carative factor number seven in Watson’s theory call for the promotion of interpersonal teaching-learning. This describes “the caring nurses as one that must focus on the learning process as much as the teaching process” (Current Nursing, 2012, para. 3).
Communication is so vital among these groups, patient progress is shared among these people, if one doesn’t pass the right information then patient care is derailed, baccalaureate degree prepared nurses are better communicators as compared to associate degree prepared nurses. Baccalaureate’s proficient in the use of research, theoretical, conceptual, psychosocial assessment, and their evidenced based approach qualifies them to be better communicator in the patient care which in turn makes patient care effective and
For example, I can delegate the task of emptying a catheter to a nursing assistant instead of having the nurse do it. Identifying the ability and skill is important as well. I will not be able to delegate a task of inserting an intravenous line if the nurse does not have training on it. To choose the right person we also need to consider the personality, reliability, and commitment because it can make the tasks of delegation easier. If a person is committed and reliable, then we know that the task will be done.
They belief that caring for the caregiver is as important as caring for the patients. There are wellness programs and stress relief opportunities for the caregivers. They recognize how important human touch can be for everyone. They employ licensed massage therapist on site for patients, family member and employees. Planetree is patient focused care that is committed to improving patient care from the patient’s perspective.
