Concussions have been associated with the game of football since the sport has been played. The idea of head to head contact between full grown men ensues the logical thought of some kind of head trauma resulting. Though these players are equipped with top notch protective gear, the gear is no match for the power and force of these men colliding. This is why the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has implemented the helmet to helmet contact rule. This rule states that a player cannot hit another defenseless player in the helmet with his helmet. This rule was designed to eliminate injuries like a concussion, however it is this rule that seems to be eliminating a lot of the games original grit and toughness. I feel there are certain situations in which the helmet to helmet contact rule is justified, however in the 2010 NFL season I believe there were enough of these penalties called to potentially challenge the integrity of the game. The increased size, speed, and strength of the athletes in the NFL is greatly attributing to the rise in concussions and other head injuries. According to the Associated Press, “154 concussions were reported from training camp through week eight of the 2010 regular season.” This shocking number is a “21% increase of the amount of concussions in the 2009 season and a 34% increase for the concussion numbers of the 2008 season.” “Concussions rise 21%.” nfl.com, Associated Press.
