I admire and look up to Dr. King and his lessons because I've hurd the stories of struggle and hurt that people, who were just a little different, had to undergo. It crinkly hit hard to home. I see Martin Luther King as a great person and impact on the world. He did great things and it's sad his life had to be cut short. Over the summer we read the book " Outliers".
Produced by Anant Singh whom stated that he began working on the project after interviewing Mandela while he was still imprisoned two decades ago (en.wikipedia.org). Once Mandela's autobiography was put into publication, Singh was granted the rights to the film adaptation. The movie begins as Nelson is a young boy in his South African village and is taking part in a manhood ceremony with other boys from the village. It then precedes by showing him as an adult boy in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1942. Nelson is a lawyer and is approached by a young woman who is being accused of stealing garments from her white female employer.
But Africa's government was the worst example of racialism and violation of the human rights. However, Nelson Mandela still stood up for what he thought was right and, led his people to freedom. He rose above his personal interests and always kept the interest of his nation above all. He was offered attractive gifts as a price of his loyalty and sincerity but he never accepted those offers. He accepted a prolonged imprisonment over the freedom that was over shadowed with a piece of slavery.
His leadership has made him seem one step ahead of both allies and competitors, which has given people the confidence to trust his leadership for many important roles he has been appointed in. In an interview with Oren Harari, Colin Powell stated his 18 principles for great leadership which applies to his success and when asked what you need for success, in two words he replied “hard work” showing his determination in any task at hand. Even after he retired he has still maintained his leadership to help others especially through the United Nations. The movie « Invictus » is based on Nelson’s Mandela’s life after he became president of South Africa. He was the first dark skinned president of the country, elected in a representative democratic election. It is important to keep in mind that apartheid still existed when Mandela became president and that racial considerations still divided the South African population. The willingness that Nelson Mandela had to change that, and his believe that he had the ability to do that was the beginning of a new era for South Africa. In this report, I will analyze how and to what extend he demonstrated competencies of “taking charge”, “visioning”, “integrity”, as well as “communication and team building” through his actions.
