I’m not quite sure how that developed, but it is noticeable. I had accepted this and quite frankly at the time it didn’t even phase me. All of that changed Christmas morning of 2006. Due to a fight between me and my grandmother and finally putting into words what I had been thinking for years, my true feelings were revealed and I was enabled to finally, at last make a connection with kin. My mother nor my father bothered to take an active role within my life so therefore I had been living with my great-grandmother since I was an infant.
We generally think about this as the Traditional Thanksgiving dinner and probably assume that the Pilgrims ate a similar dinner. After all, that is how it became traditional, right? Well, the Pilgrims ate some of these foods, particularly turkey, but some things like sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie were not on the menu. Generally Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner consists of a roast turkey or ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and some vegetables. Dessert is usually pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving and eggnog for Christmas. For both holidays children often enjoy helping their parents in the kitchen while making the dessert. The seating arrangement is also the same for both holidays, in that the adult will sit at their table and the kids will have a separate table. There are many types of decorations that are used during the Christmas time, which are traditionally green, red, and white.
Thanksgiving is a time to bring families and relatives together, alike most families there is usually a gathering home, usually grandma’s house. Some relatives travel long distances and must stay the night and travel back home the day after Thanksgiving. Usually the centerpiece of Thanskgiving is the turkey, which is complimented by cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, mince, apple and pumpkin pie, stuffing usually includes nuts and celery and other vegetables. All of these side dishes as to compliment the turkey. Just like in the story, there’s usually the father or head of the family who carves the turkey, for the most father’s enjoy this yearly tradition of carving the turkey, while the family sits at the family table eagerly awaiting a piece of meat with all the trimmings.

Sometimes I think that the dream still isn’t dead in me, especially since this past Thanksgiving. This year, my family (my mother, my sister and I) decided to be a host family to two Great Lakes Naval Base Boot Camp members for the holiday. On Thanksgiving morning, my mother and I went to pick up our two ‘recruits’. I was so stuck in a cloud, dreaming of spending my holiday with tow muscle-bound hotties, that it never occurred to me what happened next. Two young ladies approached us and introduced themselves as Midshipman MacIntosh and Shipman McDonough.

Christmas is also the only holiday to celebrate with peers and families that deals with exchanging gifts. Presents are a mystery. The secrecy of it makes the person excited and wants to know what is hidden. Thirdly, students and teachers can appreciate having no school for sixteen days. Both can relax.
