Personal statement I am applying for the MA in Social Work because I wish to become a social worker, and have wanted to become one for many years. I have always been interested in people's lives, from their background, make-up and aspirations. To do this in a work-setting on a daily basis would be the epitome of job satisfaction for me. I do care about people, especially, disadvantaged people who, due to no fault of their own, have been prevented from accessing resources and opportunities that would positively transform their life. I empathise with these people and want to make a difference to their lives as I have personally experienced abuse and misfortune.
According to the Macionis and Plummer, socialisation is defined as; “The lifelong social experiences by which individuals develop their human potential and learn patterns of their culture (Cited in Macionis & Plummer, 2012, p. 695).” Socialisation establishes the importance of an individual’s social identity through both aspects of social structure and social interaction. Throughout this essay we will explore which is more important in shaping individual’s identity. Social structure is established by the social relationships that the individual interacts with because of accepted norms and shared values, and is defined by Macionis and Plummer as “Relatively stable patterns of social behavior (Cited in Macionis & Plummer, 2012, p. 695).” Within social structure are class, status and institutions and will be expanded upon later in detail on the way they influence one social identity. Although social structure has changed over time, there are still two major sub-fields; macro-level orientation that “focuses on broad social structures that characterize society (Cited in Macionis & Plummer, 2012, p. 27)”. Where micro-level orientation is “a focus on patterns of social interaction in specific situations (Cited in Macionis & Plummer, 2012, p. 28)”.

I think that National Honor Society is the right thing for me because my parents have instilled in me a sense of responsibility and the care for others. This is such a formidable opportunity itself to be involved in due to the dedication of helping and caring for others, and being associated with multitudes of non- profit organizations. Leadership plays a huge role. I’ve always tried to show more of an independent role as a student, and help others who don’t quite understand the things that I do.

The relationship with parents/carers is the first and most important relationship in a child’s life. They need to have a strong bond or attachment to their primary carers to feel loved and secure. It is important for children and young people to have friends as they learn social skills that will be important to them throughout their lives. These skills can be vital to maintaining social relationships and help them be able to resolve conflict.
