My Socialization Process Neslihan Temel 0219774 SOCI 1000 Assignment 1 Norquest College Irfan Chaudhry October 17, 2012 “Socialization is the lifelong process of social interaction through which individuals acquire a self-identity and the physical, mental, and social skills needed for survival in society” (Kendall, Linden & Murray, 2008, p. 56). There are four main agents of socialization, family, school, peer groups, and the mass media. Each of these agents have all played a role in gaining my self-identity. These agents have all taught me how to be a part of society. Because socialization is a lifelong process, these agents have not only provided me with the skills to become a better in person in society, but they still are providing, and will continue to provide me with these skills my whole life. They gave me a sense of belonging and placement in a peer pressure filled environment. I felt very comfortable with my friends. I also felt very alone without them. During my adolescence I experienced a great amount of peer pressure, whether it be the way I dressed, spoke, or looked. My peer groups reinforced cultural values in me as well, with them I became more aware about what the cultural norm for acceptable behaviour is. The mass media has also helped my socialization process. They have informed me about special events, provided numerous viewpoints on current issues, introduced me to a wide variety of people, informed me about special products and services that were in high demand, and provided a means of entertainment by giving me an opportunity to live through other people’s experiences. I grew up in the technology era. Therefore, I was exposed to all kinds of electronic, games, videos, and computers. All these activities provided an environment outside of my regular life that I was able to socialize
