There is little to none emotion in their society. People will rather take part in their own personal interest than spend time with their own family. By passing through Irene, Clare believes she will be able to reclaim her black heritage and return back to who she used to be many, many years ago. The process of passing in both Clare and Irene's life throughout the novel restricted them from fully existing in a white or black world. These women used the different forms of passing as ways to try and find themselves but this only held them back from fully expressing all sides of their selves. The struggle would be with Gus because in the Greek culture, the father/husband is always the head of the house and makes all the decisions. All of Toula’s other family members were happy for her. Although Gus has a hard time in accepting that his daughter will be marrying a non-Greek man, he decides to accept Ian, the fiancé, into the family and is open-minded to the fact that Toula is happy and in love with him. As any other teenager, she did not want to be close to her family. Her relationship with her father was the weakest though. In the text it states “Their father was away at home at work most of the time and when he came home he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed” (899). In the story, it was never mentioned that Connie had a problem with her father. This is can be understandable because she liked how their relationship was.
I think Ismene changed her mid because Antigone is her sister and you always stand up for family. She didn’t want to commit the crime because she was trying to talk Antigone out of doing the crime. In the end Ismene is the only one who lives and has a kind of guilt free life. She may not have family left besides Creon but at least she tried to save them. I think out all the characters she made the smarter choices and she thought about the consequences.
Because it is an accepted practice for an older married woman and a younger man to be friends, Edna’s husband sees nothing strange about this. After a time Edna and Robert grow closer and start to feel for each other in more than just a platonic way. Though she doesn’t act on her growing feeling, this makes Edna reevaluate her life. She realized that she wasn’t happy with the way her life was going. Edna felt as if everyone had control of what she did, except herself.
