I stared down the seemingly endless hallway while mounted on my equine partner, Guardian. This was it, this was the one moment I had worked for. I had enslaved myself to the barn for countless hours over many the course of many years training and preparing for this. In addition to those obstacles outside the show, I had many more obstacles face me just once I arrived at the show. In the end, the biggest obstacle of all faced me, myself. I had arrived at the Arabian Sport Horse Nationals, and Guardian and I were here for the roses. The barn is where my partner and I have trained endlessly over the years. We have had to learn to communicate and trust each other. It’s my job as the rider to be sure he understands me clearly and fluidly. When people watch, I want it to look as if I am not asking him to do anything. If you even just think “whoa”, then horse should stop just by your thoughts and you pressing your seat a little harder into the saddle. If the judges were to see you using the reins, you would get points deducted from your score. In the ring, you need every edge you can get. Guardian’s health and happiness has been the most vital factor all these years. I have had to pay studious attention to, how hard he can pushed and when not to push him. Similar to human athletes, they get fatigued, and they can only do so much per training session. As my teammate, I want him to be compliant and enthusiastic about his job. All these events led me to the show grounds. On the first day, my other horse Julle, had an injury so she was out of the competition. My throat felt like it was stuffed with cotton from sheer nerves at this development. This was a lot of money spent for her to be unable to show. Then weather started to get horrendous; so we donned ourselves with fuzzy hats and puffy coats to ward off the impending chill. A cold rain then started, and it felt like
