Lets just state the known fact that life in the professional world of sports is short lived. Only a blessed 10% of people actually get to experience sports at a professional level and only a hand full successfully manage a career longevity. For the most part time in the professional light will be brief and coridgle relationship leaving only a mere oppourtunity to make some money. Ive always had a strong beliefe in my culture as being samoan (Polynesian). My mother and father instilled that in me. My father was a very strict man and always taought us the about the better things in life can happen for you as along as you keep faith in god and work hard. My father was more than a provider of the family he was my friend, my coach, and my teacher. I can talk to him about almost anything. But what is life after sports for a Polynesian? I m still living the dream right now being that this is going to be my 3 season on the 49ers. As far as life after football im not sure what I want to do as long as my family is still taken cared of. I tend to have a problem with getting introuble when it comes to money. Since I got drafted high ive had a hard time saying no to family about money. All of a sudden I was the man of my family because I had all the money. I ended up bailing my family out of a lot of things because they would leave it for the last min where it made me feel obligated because I felt bad and was out in that situation. This is where I think polys fal victim sometime to if they make big money and sign those large NFL contracts. I know for a fact that some of the worst things to do with money is spend it away on unessessary things and for me it comes to me saying no to family. Sports for Polynesians have been a steady vehichle for them to be in situations to have oppourtunities provide for their families. There is a stronger spiritual drive within Polynesians, they just have that mentality to where sports is something they can be successful in, its something where they can draw from their warrior heritage. Sports for samoans is a lot more than game, sports allows Polynesians to bring honor to their family and it is a venue where they can represent their culture and people. Life in sports for Polynesians is about family a culture, and respect is the foundation of life. Connection to that is the basis this called the faasamoan way. Faasoaman way incompasses value of respect and discipline, god and family. Athletics is just another oppourtunity to act out there worrior heritage and provide for their family.
