Good Strategy Thus far in class we have discussed several definitions of the word strategy. However, Rumelt’s approach to the subject is one that has not been touched on. “I Just Wanna Be Average" MIKE ROSE Mike Rose is anything but average: he has published poetry, scholarly research, a textbook, and two widely praised books on education in America. A professor in the School of Education at UCLA, Rose has won awards from the National Academy of Education, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Below you'll read the story of how this highly successful teacher and writer started high school in the "vocational education" track, learning dead-end skills from teachers who were often underprepared or incompetent. Rose shows that students whom the system has written off can have tremendous unrealized potential, and his critique of the school system specifies several reasons for the 'failure" of students who go through high school belligerent, fearful, stoned, frustrated, or just plain bored. This selection comes from Lives on the Boundary (1989), Rose's exploration of America's educationally underprivileged.
Hsun Tzu pushed the fact that man must be taught to be good, I agree with this idea because everyone makes mistakes which we normally learn from. If we don’t learn from them then we would just continue to make the same mistakes. He also state that there are sages working to help man learn to be good. Tony also learns that everyone is as important as him. First of all, it's important to be aware that self-confidence comes from within not from making others feel bad. In the story, Tony would often bully others because he thought they were better than he and they had more going for themselves. For example, "You see I'm from a tough neighborhood and showing your weakness makes you a target. I was a target when I was young, both for my brothers and those who call themselves my friends.
Throughout the entire country, high school students are giving up everything that makes them teenagers to either please their parents or to feel they have accomplished something. Can anyone make the statement, “grades are everything, nothing else in the world matters.” This pompous statement is unjust and unfair. Why should every kid in the world give up what they want, what they desire to do, just so they can acclaim some “glory” in having good grades. Good grades should not mean everything in high school. The most intelligent child could have the worst grades, does that make the child stupid?
