The True Meaning behind Alcoholism In “Under the Influence” by Scott Russell Sanders, he portrays, “guilt, shame, rage, and fear, along with the specter of insanity and abandonment. This represents the legacy of alcoholism, in which Sander’s father dies at the age of sixty-four from excessive drinking.” When Sanders father turned to drinking, the liquor would transform him into a different person; the type of person who would be taken away and hidden from world. Moreover, his father’s drinking became a huge part of his life and has made him the way he grew up to be. In brief, Sanders convey his message to his audience consisting of his family, other alcoholics and their families who have dealt or are dealing with alcoholism, and most of all his one and only son about the effects of alcoholism that impacted him as a child and still to this day as an adult. Sanders claims while growing up, his father’s drinking became the family secret because there was no one to turn to for help.
Sedaris and Sanders both describe their events with an emotional state in their lives, one being "Cyclops" which describes his father's exaggerated messages towards dangerous encounters as "Under the Influence" by Sanders causes a mournful tone as he recollects his father's alcoholism. "Under the influence" By Sanders truly sparked a dramatic scene in my head as I read his story as a kid dealing with a dramatic house hold experience. He dealt with a loving relative which happened to be his father, self destruct before his eyes as he watched helplessly. I can remember being at that age, where most things seem simple until I met my fathers other half. It was like night and day as weekdays turned into weekends and father figures turning me into an agitated and frusterated kid.
Later, we find out that the main character lost his mom a little over a year ago and it seems as though that he hasn't gotten past it yet. It's easy to come to the conclusion that the protagonist is addicted to cocaine because his mother died, and therefore he has lost all of his motivation, he simply does enough to get by. The protagonist suggests hypocritically that the baby try to change its life, but much like him, it is stubborn and refuses to change unless he feels he has to. Pg.2 The

Whenever I get asked to state my best qualities or even just describe myself, all I can come up with is negative thoughts. One way to develop self concept is to think about your strengths and weaknesses. It is so much easier to point out the weaknesses than your strengths. I personally feel like weaknesses can haunt someone because they prove what we are not capable of doing and that is why we might self denigrate sometimes. When I criticize and attack myself, it is because knowing I failed makes me think about if i had tried harder then it would have made a difference.
