| Meeting the needs of Adult Learners | Andragogy theory | | MICHELE Powe/HRDV 5610 | 10/6/2013 | | Andragogy are teaching strategies developed for adult learners. It is often interpreted as the process of engaging adult learners with the structure of learning experience. Many articles exist on meeting the needs of the adult learner and how to make the learning experience more effective. The two articles will discuss how to understand and meet the needs of the adult learner via the teaching strategies developed by Knowles and how effective learning has an impact on the organization. Overview The first article is entitled “Understanding Adult learners needs” by Nachamma Sockalingam PHD. In this article, the author states throughout that a facilitator must understand the learner to provide quality education. In this article, Sockalingam uses seven key suggestions based on the article “Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education” by A.W. Chickering. Although in that article, Chickering references undergraduate education, he states that these principles can be applied at any level to create a positive learning experience for a variety of learners. The needs of the adult learner are multi-layered. The article describes the seven principles as follows: * Engaging students in active learning. * Presenting effectively * Managing time * Communicating expectations * Sharing timely and relevant resources * Providing constructive feedback * Being approachable and encouraging This article states that if these needs are met, the adult learner will have an effective and positive learning experience. The second article is entitled “Understanding adult learners” by Yvonne Wichtner-Zoia. In this article, the author emphasizes that “adults are self-directed and expect to take responsibility for their learning”
