It is a basic requirement of my job role to communicate with individuals and their families, other members of staff on a daily basis. Communicating with other staff members ensures effective team working and continuity of care. It also ensures any health and safety issues are recognized and reported.

Learning opportunities for adults exist in a variety of settings. They range from formal institutions to places of employment. Considerations for adult development and learning include biological and psychological development (including deterioration and disease processes that may occur) and sociocultural and integrative perspectives on development (Merriam, 1999)(Adult Learning-Emerging Perspectives on Learning, Teaching, and Technology: adulted.about.com). While the most common reason for adults to place themselves in a learning environment is a life-changing event, once in that environment there are many factors that affect the learning experience. It is important to acknowledge prior knowledge and experiences of learners, including their ability to recognize their own skills as lifelong learners.

The Oxford dictionary defines the meaning of reflect as “to think carefully and deeply about something” . Reflection is the personal examination of your own thoughts and actions, it is about thinking things over. Reflection is an important human activity in which people recapture their experience, think about it, mull over & evaluate it. When working in an adult care setting this means being consious about how you interact with colleagues, your clients and the environment. Social learning theory from Albert Bandura and Julian B, Rotter provide a solid foundation to how humans socialize and learn from their environment. The concepts of needs in self determination are extremely pertinent for specifying what is essential to life. In conjunction, engagement theory, instructional design theory and constructivism theory help people build goals which are crucial in how people learn.
