Madam Secretary Has “Conjones” Kelly Graham HIS 225- U.S. Diplomatic History Dr. Bruce Bowlus 11/15/11 Coming to America in 1948, post-World War II as an eleven year old Jewish girl, Madeleine Jana Korbel never would have imagined that she would be the modern day Susan B. Anthony. A natural citizen of Prague, Czechoslovakia Madeleine was born to two Jewish parents, though she did not know this until in her later years while in public office, on May 15th 1937. Little known to her, she would become a trailblazer for women in politics and foreign policy in general. The decision was Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, here is where many connections would be made that would make Madeleine’s career in politics possible. While working towards her degree, Madeleine accomplished another feat while attending Wellesley; she gained citizenship of the United States of America in 1957. Madeleine graduated from Wellesley in 1959 with a degree in political science, writing her senior thesis on Czech Communist, Zdeněk Fierlinger. Another stage of Madeleine’s life happened right after graduation in Wellesley in 1959, when she married Joseph Albright. Korbel and Albright had met each other while Korbel was interning at The Denver Post during a school break. Dealing with situations such as Darfur, Rwanda and Cuba; these conflicts is when Albright went to bat for the people of those countries suffering against totalitarian leaders or rebel forces destroying entire villages and tribes. Apologizing for the United Nations not having enough of an influence in the conflicts in Darfur and Rwanda, Albright wishes she could have done more to save the lives of the innocent who were slaughtered in countries disrupted by chaos. The most important one liner Ambassador Alright had in her United Nations career would be when she was referring to the instance when after Cuban pilots shot down a small civilian plane flown by Cuban-exile protesters in international airspace. "This is not cojones," Albright announced. "This is cowardice.” The statement over nation television had raised many complaints, a woman should not speak like that the public was torn, some enraged and the others standing up for Albright as she stood up for what was right.
