‘Lost Property’, a novel written by James Maloney, is about a seventeen year old boy named Josh who superficially has an easy, comfortable life; plays in a band, has an attractive girlfriend and is supported by a loving family. However, it is gradually revealed that this is a family that is only appearing to be holding itself together, but is breaking down to the absence of one of its members. Due to many factors in Josh’s present and past life, they have caused him-self to down spiral and left him feeling Melancholy. Josh’s brother Michael is a big factor of josh’s unhappiness as he left the family. Another reason is that josh doesn’t live up to his dad’s expectations. Josh’s band is in a bit of a rough patch and he is finding himself losing interest in his girlfriend Alicia. Michael is the troublesome son who’s constant ring ups to remind the parents of their heartbreaks brings Michael to feel a mixed amount emotions but overall unhappy. Michael is five years older than Josh and is estranged from his parents, living outside Sydney. He had almost died from alcohol poisoning when he was 16 and had been in trouble with the police. Phil is a former Rugby league star who played for St George. He is well regarded by the community and is a good man. When Josh’s dad buys him a fender guitar (p 15) it signals his support for his son choices which takes the pressure off of Josh to live up to his dad. Another incident that is brought to light is when josh recollects his father’s heroic actions in the saving of Michael’s life. When we find out that Phil knew about Michael’s whereabouts the whole time and how much pain the family would go through if they knew as well, which shows how strong Phil really
