6.1 TYPES OF READINESS TO LEARN This concept was taken from module 7 “Characteristics of learners”, Sub –topic 2 “Determinants of learning” Learning is the process of acquiring new knowledge or skill or is the process of reinforcing existing knowledge, skill, behaviors and values. This knowledge is acquired through studying, practice, experience or being taught by a teacher. Learning does not just occur on its own. The learner have to be ready for learning to take place. Readiness to learn can be seen as the way that an individual is willing to accept new information and knowledge which will help in behavioral change. There is no type that is more important than the other. All aspects needs to be considered for learning to actually take place. The teacher have o put into account and check if the client is physically ready, emotionally ready, ready experience wise and ready knowledge wise. When I have a client that am to health educate I quickly access that client’s readiness. This includes knowledge readiness, experiential readiness and emotional readiness. While educating a client I try to check the anxiety level of the client as even if physically the client is ready and is knowledgeable and have had previous experience, if he is anxious learning cannot take place. I ensure that I try to allay the anxiety of the patient before commencing the health education. This will make the patient feel relaxed and learning will take place. One important thing we need to do is to ensure that we access for client’s readiness. If our clients are noticed not to be ready in any aspect, we should try working on helping them towards readiness. 6.3 SOCIAL CONTEXT The society in most cases is not familiar with the types of readiness to learn. We introduce the topic from simple understandable words to avoid confusing the client. 6.5 SIGNIFICANCE TO NURSING PROFESSION It is very important to the nursing profession as nurse needs to know the different types of readiness to learn. This will help them to actually understand how to carefully health educate a client and gain progress. 6.6 IMPORTANCE TO THE WORLD This concept will enable people to understand the reasons why some people do not actually learn. It will enable them to check the different type of readiness to know if the people are actually ready for learning. Will also help educators to work towards ensuring that they promote students readiness to learn. 6.7 RECENT RESEARCH A study conducted in Massey University, New Zealand show that learning-related values can be used as basis for holistic model of organizational learning. The values which members of an organization beliefs are what shapes the organization and people tend to follow it making it the culture of the organization. It also showed that value can be a useful approach to measuring organizational learning and that development is needed in order to identify problems to learning in an organization and redefine the way this problem are
