Assess the view that the most important element in maintaining Hitler’s regime in power between 1933 and 1945 was the consent of the German people. Interpretation D and to some extent A argue that the German people supported the regime while B and C suggest that other factors such as repression, propaganda and economic conditions played a vital role in Hitler’s maintenance of power. The German nation as pointed out in source A (“A”) had a “long tradition of obedience to authority” so we can assume that the circumstances that were created in the 1920-1930s led to the willing establishment of a new regime. This is supported by the argument that the people gave their vote to Hitler and his followers repeatedly, as argued by Flenly in “A.” Historical evidence has shown us that Hitler gained support even from Germans living outside Germany. His occupation of Austria was an outstanding achievement as Austria welcomed their German neighbors and 200,000 Austrians gathered to welcome Hitler and hear his speech.
It may be good to have power based on arms but it is better and more joyful to win and to keep the hearts of the people.” Throughout Triumph of the Will, adoration and approval for Hitler is clearly shown on the faces of those in the crowd. The documentary itself is propaganda because it portrays Hitler and the Nazi party as the good guys rather than exposing the evil and corruption within their regime. Nazism’s ideal of the power and purification of the race is predominately shown in The Triumph of the Will. Of the thousands of German citizens shown throughout the film, none are of Jewish decent. In the film, a Nazi leader states that “A people which does not hold with the purity of its race will perish”.
At Roosevelt’s inaugural speech he assured Americans that all they had to fear was “fear itself.” On the other hand, Hitler aggravated his follower’s fears and prejudices. While Franklin Delano Roosevelt did his work by stirring compassion; Adolf Hitler did his own by stirring up hatred. They both were known for their charisma, ability to arouse emotion, and rose to power during a national crisis. Both were leaders by symbolic and appeal. Franklin Delano Roosevelt used freedom symbols such as the bald eagle and used kind words such as "friend" or "my fellow..." to get people to support his ideas.

This is stated in A when it says “his aim will in future as previously have the finest reward of one day suddenly attaining legal confirmation of his work” this quote is telling us that everybody who works towards Hitler will be doing it for the greater good but only the ones which Hitler agrees with will be noticed, majority of the time this work/laws were approved by Hitler and nobody had the power or courage to stand up to him. This is also evidenced in Source B when it says “when Hitler made a decision, this often taking the form of a remark thrown out casually, which then went its way as an ‘order of the Fuhrer’…” This quote from the source is just more evidence to that whatever Hitler says goes as even when he threw out a casual remark or a joke it would end up as an order of Hitler. We know from our own knowledge that Hitler was a very powerful man and that not many went against him without feeling the consequences of the
