Lack of Support for Single Mothers Natach Reynolds Liberty University Abstract Studies have indicated that single parents, especially mothers, experience many challenges like stress, depression, financial problems, family problems, and lack of support from the community, and most importantly, emotional and psychological problems (Ghania, Faizah Bte Abd; Hashim, & Hazirah Binti, 2013). These stressors are a result of the need to provide financially for the family concurrently with caring for the home in ways traditionally handled by both men and women, acquiring new skills, and parenting. This paper discusses the mental and physical health of single mothers, as well as the psychosocial and socio-economic risk factors placing single mothers at risk for poor health outcomes. Depression and poverty are not only of great concerns for parents, but also for children. Research shows that children can also get depressed based on their parents depression. Potential ways to promote health in depressed single mothers will be presented, as well as ways to reduce the number of single parenting by reinforcing marriage. The paper concludes by helping to understanding the financial, emotional, and psychological challenges that single parents face and providing them with the crucial support needed to establish a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for their children is key.
