1. How would you describe the defining values and mission of this organization? The mission and values of Chick-Fil-A are to be “America’s best quick service restaurant” (chick-fil-a.com). This is evident by their success and open expression of values. Chick-Fil-A is a very family and faith oriented company who prides itself by maintaining those values. They have succeeded in communicating their values and mission to the public. 2. Using and referencing a theoretical model, how would you describe the organizational culture of the organization your group selected? Chick-Fil-A instills the Clan Culture. This company is extremely family and values based. One way they express this is their view on closing on Sundays. Since it’s founding, the closing is what has set Chick-Fil-A apart from other fast food institutions. Truitt Cathy views this ideal more important than the profit they could make on Sundays. Cathy states in an interview, “I've been doing it for 60 years and it's never changed. It's the most important decision I've made”. Even though 20% of the profits are made on Sundays in the fast food industry, Cathy stands by his idea (Davis & Lucas, 2007). Edgar Schein’s culture fits with Chick-Fil-A’s culture, as there are 3 Layers associated with this model. 3. How can you explain the way the culture is “perpetuated” through socialization, leadership, communications, and reward systems in the organization? According to Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-Fil-A, “the management team is conveyed the core values of his faith by having an annual seminar that lasts for four days. Speakers and motivators are also present at this seminar. One reward system that is in place is where Chick-Fil-A donates scholarship money for employees.
