In the Country of Men Essay Prompt: Najwa should be pitted rather condemned. Discuss Set in Libya during the 1970s, we are faced with a country that is highly dominated in male rule. Females in this world are portrayed as second class citizen, a procession of men. In the Country of Men, Suleiman el – Dewani’s mother Najwa is deeply faced with this society and at times it is hard to tell if we should pity her or condemn her for how she acts. The novel by Hisham Matar explores the idea of how this society is different to other, especially in concerns to where woman stand in it. Najwa does everything she can but it is clear she can’t cope in this environment. She is shown to a major alcoholic at times, especially when Faraj is out on “business trips”. We see she is faced with a lot of stress, loneliness and pain in her life, getting to a point that it is affecting her duty as a mother and a wife. When looking at the character Najwa, it is more likely she is Pitted rather comdemed. Najwa’s place in society, a woman with little to no power, can only do so much in this male dominated country. “In this world full of men and the greed of men” someone like Najwa is no more than a man’s property. When Najwa was forced into marriage, she was forced into an agreement that she now has to fore full. Najwa had said in a sarcastic tone “I must be a good wife, Loyal and unquestioning, support my man regardless” showing she knew that she had to be the wife that is expected of her without questioning it even though she mightn’t agree with it. She is expect to be “Accepting – always accepting – this life forced upon her”. Najwa being a woman and if she was only judged by this, it is more likely she is pitted rather comdemed. Apart from being a woman, Najwa has been faced with a harsh past and childhood. From an early aged she has been under her families watch and her life
