Women have to depend on men. “‘I thank you again and again for the honour you have done me in your proposal. My feelings in every respect forbid it’” (Austen, 105). Elizabeth’s rejection of Mr. Collins is the way she shows she wants to have a choice but women shouldn’t in that society. A women’s value is to get married one day with at least a husband that is the same or higher position than her family.
These observations, coupled with her never ending excuses of why she wants a wife throughout the essay, kept me interested and also had me considering how they might compare to my life experiences. Brady's reasons for wanting a wife are seemingly endless: To support her, to take care of her children (at all times), to take care of her physical needs, to keep the house clean, to take care of her sexual needs (when she wants her to), to take full responsibility and to remain faithful until she might need to marry another wife, just to name a few! To sum things up, after Brady finishes schooling, she wants her wife to quit work, so she can completely take on the full responsibilities of a wife. What I would like to do is take some positives from this sarcastic, female chauvinistic literature. For almost every instance that Brady states she wants a wife, I would agree with her.

Another role is that a wife is to be obedient to their own husbands. This command can be found in Ephesians 5:22, “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord,” also in 1 Peter 3. It is not meaning that a wife can not have her own thoughts; it is to ensure that the husband and wives work together so that they are not pulling in different directions, but that they are sharing a mutual goal. “To be keepers at home”, is a common role for wives. Since the husband’s role is to go out and provide a living for his family, the wives job is to look after the home.
Mrs Linde has had to work hard and was not afforded love and children which she longed to have. She took care of her mother and brother as her own but still desired more. Once her circumstances had changed she set out to acquire that which she had lost.
