Evaluate strategies used in health and social care environments to overcome barriers to effective communication and interpersonal interactions. Issues with Christopher: * Language because he is from Slovakia and has weak knowledge of English * Accent * Staff have little knowledge of Slovakia to talk to him about his country * His mental capacity to learn new things is weak * Sight impairment * Low self-esteem Christopher grew up in Slovakia and came to the UK 65 years ago. He now lives in a residential care home because he has developed some memory loss which is associated with Alzheimer’s and cannot manage on his own anymore. Christopher also has a slight sight impairment and has to wear specially made glasses. Christopher has some English language but the care workers sometimes have difficulty understanding his speech because of his strong accent. Sometimes Christopher will talk about places and events from the past which the care staff have difficulty identifying with. Some care staff think that he is confused and that trying to communicate with him is a waste of time. Christopher sometimes becomes stressed because he is lonely and has no one to talk to. A strategy to overcome the memory loss, even if it isn’t that bad, may be to repeat what you are saying, so that he can understand more clearly what is being said. Staff training will also need to be carried out so that they can expand on their knowledge of Slovakia and this will help them to be able to relate to Christopher. This will be effective because it will help him to feel like he is accepted and will stop him becoming stressed due to being lonely. It will also help the staff to find it easier to talk to him and will help them to understand the things which he is talking about.
