Interpersonal Conflict in Film | | Tina Matthews | | | | | One of the film conflicts in the film Spanglish is language conflict. This language conflict is what is accountable for the culture surprise that smashes two families that are tangled in the conflict. The Moreno family is made up of a woman from Mexico who moves together with her two children to Los Angeles in an attempt to get a better life for her and her children. After moving in, she becomes a housekeeper for a different family, the Clasky family, made up of a chef, his wife and two children. There is a conflict with the language because the Mexican woman can’t speak English and when Flor talks to her, she has to get someone to interpret it for her. The relationship between these two families is tense and they had to be tolerant with communication. This was towards the Clasky family since the Moreno family knew very little English. The Moreno family also had to be tolerant with the Clasky family when they used their language (English) to communicate. Because of the language difference, conflict began between the two families. The house keeper and the employers established a way to communicate with each other. The housekeeper would use her daughter to translate. This wasn’t a good way to handle the conflict because it didn’t solve the problem permanently for the housekeeper. They didn’t deliberate how they could maybe communicate if the daughter wasn’t there. The characters in the film should have resolved the conflict in a more efficient way. Flor could have taken some sort of classes that would teach her English. Before deciding to work for them she should have did more research on what the conditions were. Flor probably would have lost money while taking the English classes. But she could have taken the classes after work or during her free time. Instead of her relying on
