Essay 2 Final draft  Increasing student suicide rate and teens’ self-esteem “A 19-year-old girl, a year 1 student in the Chinese University, committed suicide by leaping from the 12-story building and died on the spot yesterday. Anna Watson reports.” The news report caught my attention because the girl in the incident is at the same age with me. Excluding this news, there are many student suicide incidents happened continuously. Student suicide rate in Hong Kong is increasing recently, so the society needs to find out the cause of it to reduce the happening of tragedy again. So why do students choose to end their life easily? The main cause of it is not the damaged self-esteem of student, but their immaturity. The external reasons of increasing student suicide are just the apparent one, not the core one. As students, they always have their life in school and at home, so they may easily face the school pressure and family pressure. Especially in this society of utilitarianism, Hong Kong students are instilled the value that more scores you get, more successful you are. Students compete with each other about their academic results, and even their extracurricular activities. If they have some mistakes among these areas, there may be some punishments on them. Under this big pressure, self-esteem of students may be damaged. Besides, there is peer pressure damaging the teens’ self-esteem. Boycott and bullying among students are common in school. It’s hard to be ignored and bullied by peer. So some students may not be able to bear the pressure, leading to the happening of suicide. All these are the major causes of student’s unhappiness. Most student suicide cases are owing to these causes. However, all people have unhappiness, not just only students have.
