The argument is made that compared to the United States standard of livings many illegal immigrants who are here live in poverty, but when you compare the standard of living here to that in Mexico it is even worse! The United States can play an important part by being a role model by providing direct help and being a good leader. This is not a short term fix but a long term solution for illegal immigration. In order for us to be aggressive we need to have harsher penalties on illegal immigration. If you are exposed as an illegal alien there should be laws stating that you will be finger printed, have a DNA sample taken, and the opportunity of American citizenship will not be awarded. This will put strain on those who have family members here in the US and will make them think twice before coming to America illegally. Another idea for harsher penalties would be to make it a felony for any illegal alien who comes into the US to pay a fine of $2500 plus a year in federal prison. This might also be considered for those who have expired VISA’s. If drugs or criminal activities are involved then existing state and federal law should be applied to the fullest extent. These actions may have a significant effect on illegal immigration and be able to take the place of a fence that is costly and doesn’t seem to work all that well, and in reducing the flow of illegal immigrants will cut down on the cost of deporting these illegal aliens
