Hunt for Red October Background This movie, based on a best setting novel, is a masterpiece of cold war genre. Captain Remius, a Russian, has command of a nuclear submarine – Red October – with new stealth technology that renders it essentially invisible to radar detection. Remius sees it as a first strike weapon & elects to defect to the USA rather than leave the submarine with superiors bent on war. When Russian authorities learn this, they try to sink Red October & eventually enlist the help of the US Navy. Captain Mancuso, skipper of a US attack sub, eventually finds Remius, decides not to sink the Russian sub & now the plot thickens as both try to elude the Russian navy. Several other colorful characters keep the action going until the climax scene at the end of the movie. Hints • This is a military situation. Pay attention to chain of command & use of authority. Watch the chain of command in action as both skippers take charge of their vessels. • Even in these military settings basic principles of leadership still apply. Look at how people influence others. • The leadership chapter should be the conceptual/theory base for critically evaluating both captains; this is Chapter 9.
