How is Odysseus an epic hero?

Whenever the topic of Greek epic is mentioned, Odysseus most often come to mind as one of the greatest heroes. Through Homer’s narrative poem, the Odyssey, about Odysseus’ adventures and obstacles, every reader is able to identify him as a courageous and intelligent leader. He was able to use his intelligence, bravery, and strength to control his fate as best as he can. Odysseus was called a hero for many reasons, but mainly due to the fact that he was able to overcome many of the dangerous adventures that were thrust upon him. In the Trojan war, Odysseus’ idea of the Trojan horse brought the victory of the Achaeans. Odysseus fought with all his might and was fearless during the battle. He was the Greek champion in many of the Achaeans’ eyes as the destruction of Troy happens under his great leadership. When Odysseus and his men landed on the island of the Lotus-Eaters, Odysseus sent out a scouting party of three men, who ate the lotus with the natives. They fell under the impression of happiness and stopped caring about going home. Odysseus went after the scouting party, and dragged them back to the ship against their will. He set sail, with the drugged sailors tied to the rudder benches to prevent them from swimming back to the island. His love and care for his men showed the quality of a respectful leader. During their encounter with the Cyclops, Polyphemus, Odysseus’ bravery and intelligence were the key role in his survival and that of his men. He did not act on impulse and always put his men first. Under Odysseus’ quick reactions, strategies and the control of the whole situation, they were able to escape successfully. Odysseus also visited the Underworld of Hades under Circe’s advice to talk to Tiresia, the famous Greek seer. He was not afraid to be surrounded by dead spirits and darkness.
