How does the practical life exercise help children in their daily living? Practical life, our daily functions that are normal and routine. Practical life exercise is the curriculum designed in the Montessori classroom for the children to promote the children development by exploring the daily basic skills. The Practical Life exercises are very importance in the Montessori classroom. They are the first activities the child is introduced to responsible to their surrounding. The first thing to realize about these exercises of practical life is that their aim is not a practical one. Emphasis should be laid not on the word “practical” but the word life. Their aim is to assist development (E.M.STANDING. MARIA MONTESSORI 一HER LIFE AND HER WORK 1998 PLUME, p.213). The activities of the practical life are seem simple but they carry the very complex purposes of promoting and developing the child’s concentration, self independence, self-discipline, fine and motor skills, self image, sense of responsibility, the grow in self knowledge, the appreciation and understanding of the limits of the environment. They are the tools to assist the children to acquire their development physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally. When we expect our children to acquire the very best performance in their academic achievement, we might as well to expect the children to adapt themselves to the society with the provision of social grace and courtesy. Independence does not come automatically as we grow older, it must be learned (Tim Seldin & Paul Epstein Ph.D., The Montessori Way, 2003 The Montessori Foundation, p.57). Children do not only learn independence, they learn responsibilities, they learn knowledge, and they learn all other method of skills, correct behavior and good habit.
