Australia’s Social and Cultural History- 1950’s In the 1950’s technological advancements greatly affected the Australian population from communications to transport. Both advancements both affected Australia’s social and cultural lifestyle in different ways, in particular the television. Very few people had TV’s and most people would crowd around window shops to view the shows, so later on, when more people could afford a TV, it became a powerful form of communication for broadcasting the news and the Melbourne Olympic games. This was a big social impact as, there were less people actually viewing the games in the stands. The TV was a great advancement, but it was competing with the radio. The radio soon began to provide more music, sport commentary and news instead of shows, this occurred when the TV became more common.…show more content…
This meant that the less fortunate families would not associate with the upper class workers who owned cars. Public transport then went down as less people were in need of it because many railway lines were closed, as visitors would then use their own cars. From the enormous number of cars on the road, the number of deaths from car accidents increased as well. Which mean that soon later road construction and safety devices such as seatbelts were introduced and saved many lives. Australia was introduced to a lot of new technological advancements in the 1950’s, which affected Australia in both positive and negative aspects.
