English 1102 “The Fall of the House of Usher” A nameless narrator walks us through the mysterious house of his childhood friend Roderick Usher on a gloomy and ominous day. From outside narrator notices house is old, creepy, has an evil atmosphere and a huge zig-zag crack in the roof. Has been asked to come to the house by Roderick because he is sick. Goes inside, find the inside just as creepy as the outside. Finds Roderick in house, super sick and pale, not himself. Roderick is sick with problem with nerves. Nerves are raw and sense of fear is greater than usual and is afraid of his own house. Roderick tells narrator that his sister Madeline is also sick. Narrator spends a few days at the house trying to comfort Roderick but can’t make him happy. Roderick says he thinks that the house is unhealthy and is causing his sickness. Madeline dies and they bury her in tombs underneath the house so because Roderick thinks doctors will want to examine her to study what killed her. As they bury her, narrator notices that her cheeks are rosy. Also realizes that her and Roderick are twins. Time passes, Roderick gets more paranoid. Narrator can’t sleep one night and Roderick comes to his door hysterical because he sees a bright colored gas surrounding house. Narrator reassures him it is a natural phenomenon and not uncommon. Narrator reads to him to calm him down and pass the night because they cannot sleep. As he reads he hears noises that correspond to the story he is reading. He ignores them at first but then they become more distinct. Notices Roderick is slumped over in chair and mumbling to himself. Narrator walks over to hear him say he has been hearing these noises for days and thinks that they might have buried Madeline alive and that she is struggling to get out. Roderick says he thinks she is behind the door. Wind blows door in and Madeline is there in white robes
