Taking a girl out to a nice dinner and a movie in hopes of getting a good night kiss on the check is out-of-date and a quickie one night stand has taken its place in the dating world. Kathleen Bogle’s Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus main focus is on the changes that have taken place over the past twenty years that have led to uncommitted sexual get-togethers that have replaced the out-of-date dating scene on college campuses. Bogle’s stated in the book that the new big thing on campus is “hooking up” with another student. Bogle goes on to show the differences between courting traditions of the early nineteen hundreds to how they are today. She writes about what she calls “The Calling Era” which is described as taking place in early twentieth century and thought of as being the respectable way of dating. During “The Calling Era” Bogle stated in order to impress a girl a boy would attempt to impress her family, too. She then goes on to talk about the rise of dating and the hooking up era. So what does the term hooking up mean exactly? Bogle interviewed many different students from two entirely different parts of the United States; a large public university and a small Christian faith private college to identify what their definition of what hooking up meant to them. The students considered sexual get-togethers as kissing and fondling to sexual intercourse without having or being in a committed relationship. Others viewed the term “hooking up” as a getting together with a girl or a boy, taking them back to their dorm or home, and engaging in sexual actions with them. Where some college students considered hooking up as being friends with benefits, most of them knew that it was a one night stand and any other contact with that person would be unlikely.
