Mark Goldstein 3/27/12 Hindley Earnshaw Character Sketch In society, men bring the connotation of destruction to everyday life. People see men as destroyers, and that men do everything wrong. In Wuthering Heights, Hindley Earnshaw fits this negative connotation perfectly. The residents of Wuthering Heights saw Hindley as a destroyer, and he never failed to treat everyone in the house terribly. Not only did he bring this terror to Wuthering Heights, he also brought this terror to himself. Hindley Earnshaw was born in the summer of 1757 to Mr. and Mrs. Earnshaw. He has long brown hair, dark skin, and brown eyes. Throughout his childhood, Hindley lived at Wuthering Heights and after college returned back to Wuthering Heights. Mr. Earnshaw returned from a trip in London, with Heathcliff, a male who was seven years younger than Hindley. Hindley despises Heathcliff, and often bullies him and treats him terribly. In chapter seventeen, Hindley attempts to kill Heathcliff with a knife-gun, but fails because Isabella tells Heathcliff before Hindley gets the chance to shoot. After his wife Frances died, he became a drunken monster, and began to gamble and curse heavily. “He has been blaming our father for treating Heathcliff too liberally; and he swears he will reduce him to his right place. (p. 30)” Hindley had one sister, Catherine, who was eight years younger than him. On the day of the Catherine’s funeral, Hindley was too inebriated to attend her service. Hindley died at the age of 27, he died a drunken mess, very deep in debt, and Heathcliff got back at Hindley by taking over Wuthering Heights. Hindley was also very clear in his thoughts, words, and actions. Hindley was a jerk to most of the people residing in Wuthering Heights. He did not like Heathcliff at all. He beat him up oftenly, and it got to the point where Mr. Earnshaw had to send
