The attitudes in the novel of many characters do not cause anything but harm as it is evident in the course of the story. This negatively impacts many inhabitants of Maycomb. It essentially caused much emotional pain to Tom Robinson who was eventually sentenced to Jail unlawfully. This lead to his death when he was trying to escape Jail where he suffered physically. It also had its negative effects on Atticus, when he was called degrading names like ‘nigger lover’ and being treated badly by the townspeople for defending Tom.
This shows that he is highly unpopular with lawyers as he believes if they do not do their job properly they should be fined however lawyers are the only category which state that he is un-liked compared to the ‘whole people’. Sources 1 and 2 both agree that he had a lot of power over the nobility and they were not fond of that. Wolsey saw himself above the nobility so he did not give them any respect and believed they could not do their job properly. Any other person would be less likely to put up with an editor consistently firing him, but Quoyle endures others' disrespect as if he does not believe he deserves to be treated any better. Alienation Holden Caulfield, an interesting man, shows that many people show phoniness and how Holden despises them to a point where he alienates them. This book shows many themes, one of them being revolving around alienation and phoniness. J.D. Salinger’s masterpiece The Catcher in the Rye shows throughout the book that Holden alienates himself from other people because he fears the phoniness of adults. Stradlater, Holden’s roommate, shows phoniness by how he is a “secret slob” also how it annoys Holden to where he gets into a fight with Stradlater over his sloppiness with Jane, which leads Holden to alienating him.

When Lennie first enters Crooks’ room, Crooks is deeply hostile to him, “he stiffened and a scowl came on his face”. David’s rude teacher not only criticized, but broke down not only him, but also his fellow classmates emotionally as well. While his classmates where being humiliated for their word choices with their answer, he sat there thinking of answers that wouldn’t bring him the most humiliation. Speaking in French, he had to list a few things that he disliked; David’s list of things that he disliked was “blood sausage, intestinal pates, and brain pudding” were a few of the things he mentioned (Sedaris). Then he goes and delivers a few things that he liked such as “IBM typewriters, the French work for bruise, and my electric floor waxer” but he then forgot that he needed to give these objects a gender (Sedaris). Students left class feeling discouraged to keep on learning the language.
