High Tech Supermarket With technology developing further every day, common or even daily aspects of people's lives are more and more taken into account and thus modernized. This process extends to the modernization of supermarkets, resulting in the so called "High Tech Supermarkets". Now, with technology commonly being labeled as a positive addition which is always supposed to make life more comfortable, one should take a closer look at this specific case of the High Tech Supermarkets, to eventually point out possible downsides and to compare them to the upsides, and so coming to a result either supporting or opposing the statement of technology always being positive. This is to be done in the following essay, whereas specially social and ethical issues will be taken into account when discussing the advantages and disadvantages. To go into this in depth, firstly a definition, better to say an explanation in form of examples of how the modernization of supermarkets manifests, seems necessary. For this, only examples of newly invented methods shall be used, not of methods which are already being used for a couple of years. One important example is the invention of paying terminals, which allow the customers to scan the bought products themselves, paying them by credit card afterwards, everything being done without the intervention, or actually the need, of a cashier. Furthermore, modern fingerprint scanning devices allow the previously signed up customer to pay by fingerprint, by the device recognizing the print and then subtracting the amount which has to be paid from the customer's bank account. The next example comes in form of smart shopping carts, which automatically scan the items placed in them. The last example which is to be mentioned here are smart refrigerators, which keep track of the products which are placed inside them and send a message to a
