High Fructose Corn Syrup What is all the buss around High Fructose Corn Syrup being healthier for you? According to the Corn Refiners Association in 1882 Corn Syrup was discovered and in 1967 came high fructose corn syrup. Reading the Corn Refiners Association website you get the understanding that corn has a lot of benefits for the world. In fact they even talk about making fuel on the same page as of it being good to have in food. High Fructose Corn Syrup tends to lend to such health problems as weight gain, dental cavities, poor nutrition, and increased triglyceride levels. High-fructose corn syrup is the most common added sweetener in processed foods and beverages. ( (Jennifer K. Nelson, 2012) HFCS is among the sweeteners that have primarily replaced sucrose which is the organic compound called table sugar. HFCS is essentially an unnatural product, in the sense that for most of human history we consumed no more than about 15 grams of fructose per day. In contrast, daily consumption in 1997 was estimated to have increased to 81 grams (nearly three ounces) per day. (Dana Flavin, 2012) All the information about the pros and cons of corn syrup can be very overwhelming. Some doctors say that having regular table sugar in your diet is better than the cheap corn syrup method. Since corn syrup is cheater to produce then table sugar, that’s why it goes into almost everything we eat. The U.S. put an import tariff on foreign sugar, raised the price of sucrose so high that corn had to be the main source in the U.S. The second main supply of sucrose comes from the European Union, which does not import high fructose corn syrup. By the U.S. pushing companies to use the high fructose corn syrup, made a lot of the candy markers move out of the country. I understand that we as Americans have to watch out for the price of food, but at what expense.
