Whilst teaching during the introduction I always explain to the students in a light humoured approach if they don’t talk to me then its lonely as a teacher at the front of the class doing all the talking. I explain that’s its important for them to ask me questions throughout the session so there is clarity. Some newer teachers that I have observed can find this approach a bit daunting as you need to be able to answer a wide range of questions and keep the conversation that normally follows on track with the course and still stay within the time frame. Verbal communication is important when teaching as a percentage of my candidates English is not there first language, so I need to ensure that I’m not speaking to fast when delivering the lesson. I can also have candidates with very different levels of experience in the same class, as a Teacher its very important not to use ‘jargon’ or acronym, example would be an ‘RGN’ which is a Register General Nurse. I do think it’s important for the new candidates to start to get to grips with these terms but always explain the jargon, and reiterating to first point, enabling the student to communicate if they are unclear. Non Verbal communication within teaching, I believe to be very important as you can tell a lot from your candidates body language, normally at the very start of my session, I observe very closed body language from the new candidates as the day goes on you can see them relax as they engage with the course. But as a teacher I am always conscious of my own non verbal communication skills and how I put the information across, use of movements (especially of the hands) to communicate (Gesticulation), eye contact (Oculesics), Use of time, waiting, pausing when talking (Chronemics), and my position within the classroom
