If you analyze the photo you will notice that gun violence is not the subject of just one area in Philadelphia, it has taken over the whole city As you see below it is a recurring issue, one hand to the other. From the easy access of guns which gun laws provide; that leads to the death of innocent people which results in even more guns. The reason more guns is the final result is because people the innocent lives lost’ family members result to gun violence also. I lived right next door to the mother of a police officer who died in the
1 GUN CONTROL IN AMERICA Comm-215 06/13/14 Instructor: John Cantlon 2 Are gun laws in the United States strict enough to keep our community and children safe? By now everyone is familiar with the recent school and university shootings all around our country and even around the world. These events have affected our community, schools and children dramatically in the past 15 years. Most school districts around the country have hired more Police Officers and have increased their security in order to fight this new trend of violence that seems to be getting more popular by people with mental illness or personal vengeance. One of the most remembered and tragic school shootings that started this tragic trend around the country was the “Columbine School shooting” on April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in Columbine, located in Jefferson County in the State of Colorado.
In a perfect world this would be true. However, there are many other factors that must be taken into consideration before agreeing with this statement. For example, in a 1996 study Professor Gary Kleck (University of Florida) states that more than a million crimes are thwarted due to the homeowner being in possession of a firearm, with only a very small percentage of these incidents ending up in death or injury of either party. With guns being banned, it would simply take a group of criminals to march into a home with no fear of being shot, to overpower someone and do as they please. This is assuming that the criminal who is breaking countless laws as it is has decided to abide by the gun control law.
In the gun control argument, I stand with the side that wants more gun control and less permission to carry a gun. There are many rules that I am against that are for guns, like to buy a gun you only get a background check and that’s it, I think you should get checked every year, and not only should they do a background check, they should also do a psychological test, and you should have to go to a course on guns and gun use every time you want to renew the license. There have been a lot of accidents around the country because of this issue of gun control, people are acquiring guns way too easily and are not using them properly, if you are buying a gun then like it should either be for hunting animals or for self-defense. They shouldn’t use them just because they don’t like the person or because of revenge or other stupid motives like those.
and Robert Kennedy the 1960’s were two foundational instances when the government knew they had to act and strengthen gun control laws. Gun control laws have always been an issue for every state. One of the biggest issues is that we don’t have enough people that are willing to speak up for stricter gun control laws. According to an Associated Press poll in December, “only half of Americans thought that gun laws should be stricter and 15% actually said they should be less strict.” I think we can all agree that gun control laws should be stricter. There are people who are mentally ill that are able to purchase guns with the intent of killing people.
Gun ownership plays a big role in personal safety. According to the American Firearms Institute “guns are used for self-defense in the United States as many as 2.5 million times each year.” How many criminal targets would have became victims of violence or robbery if a defensive firearm wasn’t involved? That’s a question I feel every person should ask when deciding whether they are pro gun control or
Chpt:3 Gun violence in America has risen drastically in the past 100 years. This has caused a high mortality rate and many disruptions in American home. The United States has the highest mortality rate, per 100,000 population size. With homicide, suicide and other incidents recorded, the United States stands well above other countries with homicide at 3.98 in comparison to the next highest homicide rate at 0.81 which clearly shows the gap. While some say a gun in the home is for protection, a study done in King County Washington concluded “that for every instance of justifiable homicide, there were 1.3 accidental deaths, 4.6 criminal homicides, and 37 suicides with guns”(Spitzer, p.66) Violence without guns would surely continue, but the
Gun Violence Solutions for America The recent tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary school once again brought to the forefront of public debate the role of firearms in our culture. The American culture of gun ownership is one of the most distinguishing features of this nation as the United States has almost as many firearms as people. Enshrined into our national fabric with the 2nd Amendment, the debate on guns and their restrictions is every bit as emotionally charged and hotly debated as immigration or abortion. While law-abiding citizens should continue to be allowed to own guns, a re-evaluation who is allowed to purchase them combined common-sense restrictions would go a long ways to preventing tragedies. Firearm ownership is a long American tradition, dating back to before the Revolutionary War when the forefathers of our nation needed guns on a daily basis for hunting or personal protection.
Gun violence is a major issue in the United States, over the years the number of injuries and deaths from a firearm has sky rocketed leaving people wondering when it will stop. Though many efforts have been made to prevent the issue of gun violence the numbers are steadily rising at an alarming rate throughout the inner cities and also suburbs throughout the world. Most acts of gun violence are senseless and leave a lot of people affected. From mothers and fathers who will never see their children again due to an untimely death, to mothers and fathers who’s children that were on the other side of the gun that committed the crime and are facing life behind bars. These and many other scenarios are the main issues of gun violence.
Millions of honest Americans own guns. They are, to some people, “their life” it is a rush to shoot and collect firearms. The Olympics even recognize it as a competitive sport. So why is the public so scared of guns? The main reason is media.
