“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution gives the impression that gun control issues should be very black and white. Unfortunately this is not the case. There are too many standpoints to put a number on it. Ranging from absolutely no one should own a firearm, to citizens should be able to roam the streets with bazookas, and everything in between. There are many viewpoints for those who are in favor of gun control. One of the most common is that passing restrictive laws against guns will reduce crimes. Another is that the easy availability of guns is the cause of so much crime.…show more content…
In a perfect world this would be true. However, there are many other factors that must be taken into consideration before agreeing with this statement. For example, in a 1996 study Professor Gary Kleck (University of Florida) states that more than a million crimes are thwarted due to the homeowner being in possession of a firearm, with only a very small percentage of these incidents ending up in death or injury of either party. With guns being banned, it would simply take a group of criminals to march into a home with no fear of being shot, to overpower someone and do as they please. This is assuming that the criminal who is breaking countless laws as it is has decided to abide by the gun control law. If he/she has not, the offender now has even more of an upper hand. This being said, it is easy to argue that a law banning civilians from owning guns would actually increase crimes. A great example of this is England. Banning or restricting guns does not necessarily mean there would be less crime. There are more factors to increased gun violence than simply accessibility. Furthermore, although outlawing guns could possibly decrease firearm related casualties. One must realize that it is highly probable that this would increase injuries connected to crimes. I absolutely agree with the current laws prohibiting felons from possessing a firearm as well as making sure guns are out of a child’s reach.
