“Good Dog” (The Truth about Pit bulls) By: Dominic Green Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that pit bulls are not naturally dangerous and that they shouldn’t be banned in the U.S. Thesis Statement: Pit bulls are just like any other dog. It depends on how a pit bull or any other breed of dog is nurtured to determine the characteristic of the dog. Introduction I. Attention Getter: How many people today own a dog? Are they pit bulls? B.) A pit bull bite is also far more likely to draw media attention. 1.) Many dogs of other breeds bite people, but these incidents almost always go unreported. 2.) They’re just not exciting enough for the media. (Slide). C.) Despite this bad rap, a well-bred, well-socialized and well-trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent and gentle dogs imaginable. 1.) Main Pt.: The first myth is that pit bulls have locking jaws. A.) There’s no proof of any kind of jaw locking or clamping down and not releasing for pit bulls. 1.) Pit bulls have the same kind of jaws and teeth as other dogs. a.) According to Dr. Lerh Brisbin of the University of Georgia, There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of “locking mechanism” unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier. B.) Another myth about pit bulls is that they eventually turn on their owners. 1.) This is TOTALLY FALSE. a.) Healthy pit bulls with a stable temperament are succeeding in countless homes across the U.S. b.) Dogs that bite people typically troubled individuals that are set up to fail by irresponsible and reckless owners who have ignored or disregarded the warning signs that come with every dog bite. c.) In general, dogs bite because of improper handling and abuse.
