Gay Prom Students Should This Be Allowed INTRODUCTION Just imagine, the lights are shining on you, your dress is amazing, makeup flawless, and shoes stunning. This is your moment to shine, to show all your classmates how perfect you can be. And now all of this is taken from you in one quick swoop. “No, you can’t attend your senior prom because you are gay, lesbian, or transgendered.” According to Webster’s Dictionary the word “gay” is described as, happily excited, keenly alive and exuberant: having or inducing high spirits, brilliant in color. Nowhere did I ever read, horrible, degrading, disgusting, or nasty. So why are principals treating these student like there is something wrong with them? Most people in this world probably do not wake up in the morning and decide that today they will straight, gay, lesbian, or bisexual. This is something that is part of our genetic makeup. Homosexuality has been around and documented since caveman times. There is even proof of homosexuality among other mammals. Homosexuality has been proven time and time again to have existed long before it was recognized as shameful. THESIS Banning a child from their senior prom to prove a point to all of his or her fellow students that gay is bad is absolutely disgusting. We are in the 21st century, and should be more open minded than what we are now. As an instructor aren’t we supposed to raise our kids to have high self-esteem and to believe that they can conquer the world and become whatever they want to be in life? Pointing out one or two students and telling them that they are not allowed to attend one of the schools biggest functions because of the way they were born is unjust.
