Typically these are achieved by a combination of traveling, volunteering, interning, or working. Students get very burnt out from high school, so why not take a break? Sixty percent of students are not mentally prepared to go straight to college after high school (“Data”). Many students can go gain experience in their field of study to increase their further knowledge during a gap year. They could also go and learn a new language or tour a different country.
Why High School Graduates Should Take a Year Off Before Going to College I believe that after graduating high school it is helpful in many ways to take a year off before you decide to enter college. Nothing is better for a person than to be able to live a year with a fresh and open mind for what they want to do for the rest of their life. This is a year to be able to consider all the options, find stability in their life and with their financials, and they would be way more motivated to go back to school or even have better luck getting into a school. A year to be able to consider all the options in life could be very useful for indecisive people. If you are not positive on exactly what you want to do in life yet a year is more than enough to research jobs.
The first year of college forms students into well-rounded individuals. A lot of people don’t come to realize how accustomed they are to their social groups until they are forcedly pushed out of their comfort zones. Starting college is essentially hitting the restart button; it’s a fresh start, a chance to create a new reputation. In my first few weeks of college I met many new people during welcome week, so many that it was hard to recall some of their names. Though it was overwhelming, when classes started I had a chance to make actual connections with people and make new friends.
) Barriers for the Mature Student The college campuses of today are very different than those of years past, as many mature students are going back to school. These students have different needs than the traditional student they tend to want additional job skills for a new job or continuing education for the position they have now, but a few are still looking for the traditional college degree. Whatever the reason for returning to school the older student faces many challenges that the traditional student does not encounter. When I was a teenager in high school you graduated and went to college, to work, or in my case, started a family. Choosing the family option, I felt that going to college was something I had passed up for my children, but now that my children are grown I am starting college, which I would have never believed this when I was in high school.
And the number one answer I could think of right off the back was to make that money. Nowadays, student around my age only think about going to college in order to be successful finically, not just for an education. Although some choose to learn far beyond the classroom, many students fail to take the time to go into deeper thinking to figure things out for themselves. I believe education is a tool that a person obtains through many years of development and learning, and will be continuously employed throughout the duration of their lives. Growing up, my mom pretty much told me that if I was not joining the military then I was for sure going to college.
Just think about all that hard work you have done throughout the last three years; taking test, completing projects, and preparing yourself for college. Many colleges require a list of all the classes you took your senior year, even the levels of those courses. By looking at this list they will determine what kind of students you are and if you decided to slack off. Senior year is just another year to strengthen your knowledge and learning skills, to prepare for all the challenges ahead. A successful senior year can lead you to a better path to a successful future.
Allison Perrymond Archer ASC 101 29 November 2011 I made it through my first semester The first year of college can be a new and exciting journey for many students. Students can also take on new experiences in their first year of college; it can also come with bumps along the way. As a student he or she must find a way to balance their new life as a college student and their transitions. There will be difficulty transitioning such as adapting to new the new environment, trying to make new friends and difficulty with class work. Adjusting to an environment that you’re not used to can be too much for some students.
Including room-and-board expenses, and the total cost for a student, at a public university, averages $11,354 and at private colleges, $27,516. Most students, who struggle to keep up with their payments, eventually get a job. Freshmen who are in need should look for campus jobs that can both bring educational and financial benefits to them, a job from which they learn something and a job from which they receive a pay. However freshmen that need the money more should stick to jobs that just pay them, if they are not able to find these educational jobs. As they continue their college life they should keep searching
(Teacher) (Class) 1 November 2011 High School Vs. College Everyone needs a good education in order to sufficiently make it through life these days. In order to achieve this, a person must graduate high school and college. Many people seem to think life as a high school student and a college student are very similar, but to me they have many differences. When I graduated high school, I decided that I would go to college and I became very aware of not only the differences, but the similarities as well. A couple of the things I noticed were the differences in the scheduling and rules and attitudes, responsibility on my part, and the work load.
When a teenager enters college and starts to live like a college student, there are a lot of obstacles that come in the way. One of the obstacles is fearing of looking foolish or ignorant in-front of others. I remember when I came to college on the first day there were so many different types of people, and it came to a point in my head that I could not act as my self whiles I was on the campus grounds. The reason for that was because in college there are groups, and different types of fraternities, which involves huge parties, getting popular, and gaining respect. Unfortunately, most students are attracted to this kind of life.
